Giving Back to Keep our Beaches Beautiful

As part of our commitment to giving back to our community, Miami Beach Suncare hosted a cleanup site for the 30th Annual International Coastal Cleanup on September 17, 2016.

Organized by and the International Ocean Conservancy effort, we were one of 45 host sites in Miami-Dade County working hard to keep our coasts clean! Along with the City of Miami Beach’s Styrofoam ban, this is a great way of coming together to fight for debris free seas. Trash in the water can compromise our health as well as that of the wildlife that depends on a healthy ocean. This is why our annual participation in this event is so critical to our mission of keeping our beaches beautiful.

It’s important to highlight the effects that a pollution filled environment can have on the wildlife in the area.  On Miami Beach, for instance, we are still in turtle nesting season, which began on May 1st and runs through the end of October.  While each turtle typically lays about 100 eggs, only 1 of the 100 eggs will survive to adulthood. With that, the amount of debris left on our beaches can deter the chances of that one little sea turtle making it into the ocean. It’s our responsibility to keep our beaches clean and to maintain our oceans pollution-free.  MB Suncare remains committed to doing our part.

With the help of our volunteers, we collected all types of trash from cigarette butts to plastic bottles and food wrappers. Plastic debris remains a growing concern in the marine environment with the top five most commonly collected items being plastic so our volunteers placed extra emphasis on searching for plastic. On that typically warm sunny Saturday morning on Miami Beach, the team was full of smiles and ready to work hard to keep our beaches clean and healthy!

On behalf of MB Suncare, we would like to thank each volunteer who took the time to help us leave our coastal areas better than we found them. We also want to recognize the efforts of Dara Schoenwald, the event coordinator for Miami-Dade, who ensured that we were all well equipped to do our very best at each cleanup site. It was a great day of glove wearing, bag carrying, debris documenting fun!  We look forward to seeing you at our next cleanup!
